Environmental Public Health Information Management System

Digitalization - Knowledge for the future!

Hans-Petter Halvorsen

Introduction

Environmental Public Health Information Management System (EPH) is a system for collection and presentation of environmental data in Grenland, Norway. The collection of data come from different sources, where one is from small-scale measurement stations developed at University of South-Eastern Norway - USN.

Digitalization: The systems that are developed store information in a Database and present an overview of the emissions and effects of emissions in Grenland in the last 50 years on a Web Site. Grenland is one of the areas in Norway with the historically highest density of heavy industry and associated emissions to the environment. What can we learn from the previous historical environmental issues in Grenland? Applied Machine Learning will give you the answers!

In combination with an existing Real-Time Environmental Public Health Information Management System (EPH) created in previous projects, we will get an unique overview of environmental data both in the past and in the future.

Machine Learning (ML) will be applied to get aggregated information from these environmental data. This new insightful information will then be presented on the website.

System: Below we see an overview of the system:

Measurement Data are acquired from different sources, both from large Measurement Stations located in Grenland and from small-scale measurement stations. The idea is to collect a large amount of data from different sources into one unified system. The data can then be monitored and analyzed in different ways. Better insight and decisions: By combining data from different sources we can compare and see the data in a new context.

Several projects has been carried out by students at University of South-Eastern Norway - USN. The students are Bachelor students from Informatikk og Automatisering (IA) (Bachelor of Engineering, Computer Science and Industrial Automation) and Master Students from Industrial IT and Automation (IIA) (Master Study (Campus Study Program), which is an English study program for Norwegian and foreign students).

Below we see the real-time monitoring of air polllution data 24-7 at University of South-Eastern Norway. On the TV screen we see real-time data and historical data from the different measurement station in Grenland, Norway. We see Nils-Olav Skeie viewing the web application on a large TV screen.

Overview of the System

The data is made public available and they are monitored, analysed, and presented at a public Web Site (Master Thesis 2018) or alternatively Web Site (Bachelor Project 2017), or this third alternative Web Site (Master Thesis 2017) . The data is of public interest, e.g., asthmatics, decision makers, and for research, etc.

Below we see a system overview:

Monitoring Environmental Issues

The main goal with this project is to measure, collect and monitoring environmental issues in Grenland, Norway.

Below we see information about the project in a local newspaper:

Monitoring Example: In the Figure below we see monitoring of PM10:

Knowledge for the Future

The Environmental Public Health R&D project is a collaboration with local companies and industry. The project is about development and maintenance of infrastructure and data system for gathering, acquiring and analysis of environmental and public health information data for Porsgrunn and Grenland.
Typical data for acquiring and analyzing are air pollution and air quality, emissions from industry, emissions from cars, number of cars, etc. Design and development of stations for data acquitting and monitoring, or integration with existing stations are important part of the project.

Knowledge for the future: The system will be important in the development of new industries, research and development areas.

Project Partners

In this R&D project the following companies are involved:

Others are also involved in the project, such as

This system has been developed in cooperation with and part of different student projects, see more details about the spesific student projects below.

Measurement Stations

An important part of the project is the Measurement Stations that collects the environmental data.

(Picture taken by Students)

The Figure shows 2 different Measurement Stations, one full-scale scale Measurement Station, and one Micro-scale Measurement Station. In this project we are building and testing new Micro-scale Measurement Stations that have been built from scrach. We wil then test and compare the Micro-scale Measurement Stations together with the full-scale Measurement Station.

Web Sites

An other important part of the project is the web site that displays and present the environmental data. Below you find the web site that has been developed as part of this R&D project.

So far, 3 different prototypes have been made:

Link to Web Site Prototype #3 (Master Thesis 2017)

Furter projects will take the best from both these web sites and merge them together to the final system.

Project Management System

In order to keep track of the development of the projects the Project Management System (PMS) is used. PMS is a modern and flexible Web Application that handles all aspects of the project, from Requirements Analysis, Task Mangement including Taskboard, Meetings (Notice of Meetings, Minutes of Meetings, etc.), Discussions, Status Reporting, Issue Tracking and Management.
